He is up before anybody. Not because he is disciplined. Because that is simply when he is up.
The kitchen is cold for the first ten minutes. He puts the water on. He gets the bread out and the cheese and whatever fruit there is, and the small dish of olives that his mother in law brings and that nobody has ever asked for and everybody eats.
Nine years of this. Give or take a fortnight of illness and one week when the gas went.
The children come in one at a time, in the order they always come in, and eat the things they always eat, and say roughly what they always say. His wife arrives last with her hair still wet. There is a stretch of about eleven minutes where the whole household is in one room and nobody is anywhere else.
Then it empties, and he stands there with a cloth in his hand and the table looking like it always looks.
And a few weeks ago he had a thought that he did not like.
He thought: I have made the same breakfast three thousand times and I could not tell you a single one of them apart.
It is not sadness exactly. He is not unhappy. It is more that a man wants to be able to point at something, and when he looks back at nine years all he can see is a very long line of identical mornings, and something in him has started to quietly conclude that a life made of that is a life that has not amounted to very much.
He has not said this to anybody. What would you even say? It would sound like a complaint about a good life.
If you know that feeling, sit down and have some tea. Nobody here is going to ask you to do more.

Repetition is not the enemy of meaning, it is the shape of it
Let me say something plainly about the arithmetic you have been doing.
You have been counting mornings the way a man counts identical coins, and concluding that because none of them stands out, none of them is worth much. But that is not how anything valuable in a household actually works.
Nobody remembers a particular morning. Everybody remembers that there was always breakfast.
That is not the same fact viewed twice. It is a completely different fact, and it is the larger one. A child who grows up in a house where the table is set every morning does not carry the memory of any single table. They carry something underneath memory, which is the settled and unexamined knowledge that the world holds up.
You built that. Three thousand times. Not one of which was interesting.
You have been doing something enormous, and you have been doing it in the one place nobody would ever think to look. Colossians 3:23 says whatever you do, work heartily as for the Lord and not for men, and the whatever is doing the heavy lifting there, and it is the Holy Spirit inside you who has made an ordinary kitchen a place where that sentence is literally true at six in the morning.
God does not have a category for small
Here is the thing that undoes the arithmetic completely.
We sort our days into important and unimportant, and we do it constantly, and Scripture simply does not use that filing system. Jesus took a cup of cold water given to somebody and put it in the same sentence as a reward that does not get lost. He watched a woman put two very small coins into a box in a temple full of large donations and said she had put in more than all of them.
Not more meaningfully. More.
That is not a kind way of consoling somebody with a small offering. That is a different accounting system operating in the open.
You are not living a smaller life than the people whose weeks make better conversation, and nothing you have done has been overlooked. Hebrews 6:10 says God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love you have shown, and it is His Spirit who has been present in every one of those eleven minute stretches when your whole household was in one room.
Now hear the part this site never breaks. Nobody is telling you to do more of it. There is no target here, no plan, no suggestion that three thousand mornings would have been better as four thousand. You have already been faithful, in the present tense, in a stretch of years you have been quietly writing off. Luke 16:10 says the one who is faithful in very little is faithful also in much, and it is the Holy Spirit who has made a very little into the actual substance of a household.
And underneath the whole of it: God is the one keeping you while you keep the mornings. You are not holding your family up with your own two arms at first light. You never were.
Something is on this table for you, in a kitchen at first light or wherever you are reading this.
You are standing in the middle of a faithfulness you cannot see from where you are, and it is real right now. 1 Corinthians 15:58 says your labor in the Lord is not in vain, and the sentence is written in the present rather than as a promise about later, and it is the Spirit of God who has been at that table with you every morning you thought you were alone in a cold kitchen.
There is nothing wrong with your life. There is something wrong with the ruler you have been measuring it with.
So put nothing new into your day. Take one thing that is already in it, and do it knowing exactly whose room you are standing in. That is not a lesser faithfulness for people with dull weeks. That is the thing itself, and it always has been.
Declare this over yourself
You speak these as somebody standing in a place that was given to you rather than earned. The authority in them is Christ's own and delegated, and it is the Spirit named in Colossians who makes the ordinary hour holy rather than your effort. What God builds out of three thousand mornings is His to decide, so leave the outcome with Him and simply say what is true.
- Three thousand mornings I cannot tell apart, you are not evidence that my life came to nothing. Colossians says whatever I do is done for the Lord and not for men, and the Spirit of God has been in this kitchen every time. You are the shape of a house that has always held up.
- Ruler I have been measuring myself with, you are broken and in the name of Jesus I put you down on this table. Scripture says God is not unjust so as to overlook the work and the love, and His Spirit has been present in every eleven minutes of it. This ordinary day is where I keep it, and He counts it fully.
- Father, You are keeping me while I keep these mornings, and Your Spirit has been at this table before I was awake. What I do here with nobody watching is not smaller than anything. I go back to the bread as somebody who is already faithful.
