There is a gate on that track that has no business being shut.
There is nothing in the field. There has not been anything in that field for years. The people who own it live somewhere else and would not know a gate from a stile.
He shuts it anyway. Every single time.
He has shut it in the rain with his arms full. He has shut it at eleven at night with a torch in his teeth. He shut it on the afternoon of his mother's funeral, coming back from the church, and he only knows that because his brother mentioned it afterwards in a tone that he still cannot entirely read.
If you asked him why, he would say what men like him say, which is: because it is a gate.
Ten thousand times, near enough. Never once observed. Never once mattered.
Now here is what came at him a few weeks ago, sitting on the step at the end of a long day with his boots off.
He looked back at his life and could not find anything in it except a great many things like that gate.
Correct. Small. Unwitnessed. Adding up, as far as he can tell, to nothing anybody would ever mention.
He is not sorry for himself. He has no time for that. It is more that he genuinely does not know whether a life built out of that is a life built out of anything, and there is nobody he would ever ask.
If you have wondered the same thing, come and lean on this gate. Nobody is going to tell you to do more.

He put little and much in the same sentence and did not rank the man
There is a line of Jesus that gets used as a warning and is actually one of the kindest things He said.
One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much.Luke 16:10
Look at what He does with the word little. He does not despise it. He does not treat it as a rehearsal for the real thing. He says that the same quality shows up in both, which means the quality is not scaled to the size of the job.
Faithfulness is not a small version of something bigger. It is the identical substance whether it is in a gateway or in a government, and God is looking at the substance.
That is why a gate shut ten thousand times on an empty field is not a footnote to your life. It is the material your life is actually made of.
You have been faithful, in the present tense, in ten thousand things nobody would ever have checked. Luke 16:10 puts the very little and the much in one breath without ranking the person doing them, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been on that track with you in the rain and at eleven at night, which means the substance is real and it is not nothing.
Somebody has been keeping a record you did not know about
There is a strange small passage in Malachi that I keep going back to.
People in a flat, discouraging stretch, saying to one another that there did not seem to be much in it. And then a handful of them talked, ordinarily, and the text says the LORD paid attention and heard, and a book of remembrance was written before Him.
Not the highlights. A running record, kept at the time, of ordinary things, because somebody in the room thought they were worth keeping.
You have been written down, and you were written down on the days you assumed nobody was counting. Malachi 3:16 says the book was kept for those who feared the Lord and thought on His name, and it is the Spirit of God who has been at that gate every single time, so the record is real and it is not a summary anybody made up afterwards.
Now hear the part this site will not break. Nobody is telling you to do more. There is no target here, no rota, no suggestion that ten thousand should have been twelve. A man whose life is genuinely made of small correct things is not being told to add anything to it tonight.
You are not living a smaller life than the men whose work gets talked about, and you have not been overlooked. Hebrews 6:10 says God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love you have shown, and it is His Spirit who has been present for every one of those latches, which means the arithmetic you did on the step is simply the wrong sum.
And under all of it: God is the one keeping you while you keep the gate. You have not been holding a valley together on your own, and you never were the only reason anything stayed where it should.
Something is here for you, on a step with your boots off or wherever you are reading this.
You are standing in the middle of something you cannot see the shape of from where you are, and it is real tonight. 1 Corinthians 15:58 says your labor in the Lord is not in vain, and it is written in the present rather than as a promise about later, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been on that track with you for every one of those ten thousand times.
There is nothing wrong with your life. There is something wrong with the ruler, and you borrowed it from a world that only counts what somebody wrote down.
So do not add anything. Take one thing that is already going to happen tomorrow, and do it knowing exactly whose track you are on. That is not a smaller faithfulness for men with quiet lives. That is the substance itself, and Jesus said so.
Declare this over yourself
You speak these as somebody standing in a place given to you rather than earned. The authority in them is Christ's own and delegated, and it is the Spirit named in Malachi and Colossians who makes an ordinary act holy rather than your reliability. What God builds out of ten thousand latches is His to decide, so leave the outcome with Him and simply say what is true.
- Gate that nobody would ever check, you are not proof that my life came to nothing. Malachi says a book of remembrance was written before the Lord over ordinary people in a flat season, and the Spirit of God has been at this latch every time. You are where the covenant is actually kept.
- Ruler I measured myself with on that step, you are the wrong measure, and in the name of Jesus I put you down in this gateway. Scripture says God is not unjust so as to overlook the work and the love, and His Spirit has been present for every one of them. What I do here with nobody watching is not smaller than anything.
- Father, You are keeping me while I keep this track, and Your Spirit has been out here in the rain and at eleven at night. This ordinary day is where I hold it, and You count it fully. I go back to the gate as somebody who is already faithful.
