The Round Nobody Writes About

Eleven years, same round, and he could drive it with his eyes shut, which is a thing people say and in his case is close to true.

Out at twenty past five. Down the valley, the two farms, the village, back up the far side, the caravan site in summer and not in winter, and home by two if the bridge is open.

He knows which gate you have to get out for. He knows the dog on the third farm that has never once been a problem and looks like it will be. He knows that the woman at number eleven will be at the door before he is out of the van, and that the man at the end of the terrace will not answer and does not need to.

Nobody would write about it. That is the thing.

He was at a wedding a few weeks ago and somebody asked him what he did, and he told them, and they said, oh, lovely, and moved on. And he stood there with a drink and had a thought that has not gone away since.

He has spent eleven years on a route that nobody would ever describe.

Not badly spent. He is not ashamed of it. It is more that when he tries to think of what he has actually done with his life, he finds a road and a set of gates and a great many mornings, and there is nothing to point at, and something in him has quietly begun to conclude that a life like that has not been spent on anything at all.

He has never said that out loud. It would sound like self pity and he is not a self pitying man.

If you drive a round like that, come and stand by the van a minute. Nobody is going to tell you to do more with your life.

The measure Jesus used was not size

There is a sentence of Jesus that gets read as a warning and is actually one of the kindest lines in the Gospels.

One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much.Luke 16:10

Read what He does with the word little there. He does not despise it, He does not apologize for it, and He does not say that the very little is a rehearsal for the real thing. He says the same quality is present in both, which means the quality is not scaled to the size of the job.

Faithfulness is not a small version of something larger. It is the same substance whether it is in a valley or in a parliament, and God is looking at the substance.

You have been faithful, in the present tense, on a road nobody would ever describe. Luke 16:10 puts the very little and the much in the same sentence without ranking the person doing them, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been in the van with you at twenty past five, which means eleven years has not been eleven years of nothing.

Somebody has been keeping a record you did not know about

There is a strange small passage in Malachi that I keep coming back to.

A group of people who felt exactly what you felt at that wedding were talking to each other. Not preaching. Not testifying. Talking, in a season when nothing was going particularly well and it seemed to them that serving God was not getting anybody anywhere.

And then the text does something extraordinary. It says the LORD listened and heard, and a book of remembrance was written before Him.

Somebody was writing it down. Not the highlights. The ordinary conversation of ordinary people in a flat stretch.

You have been written down, and you were written down on the mornings you assumed nobody was counting. Malachi 3:16 says the book was kept for those who feared the Lord and thought on His name, and it is the Spirit of God who has been present at every gate you got out for, which means the record is not a summary made afterwards. It is a real book about real mornings.

Now hear the part this site will not break. Nobody is telling you to do more. There is no target, no plan, no hint that eleven years would have been better as something else. You are not living a smaller life than the people whose jobs make better conversation, and you have not been overlooked. Hebrews 6:10 says God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love you have shown, and it is His Spirit who has been on that route with you the whole time, so the arithmetic you did at that wedding is simply the wrong sum.

And underneath all of it: God is the one keeping you while you keep the round. You are not holding a valley together with your own two arms at twenty past five, and you never were.
