Caught In TimeIsaiah 42:3

The Cup He Stopped Offering

This message is for the man who realized he no longer offers tea to people who come to his door, having done it automatically his whole life, and who has told nobody because it is far too small to be worth raising

In that house you do not ask people if they want tea. You put it in front of them.

That is not a rule anybody wrote down. It is simply what has happened in that doorway for as long as anybody can remember, and it happened in his mother's house before that, and probably in her mother's.

A man comes about the water. Tea. Somebody's son needs a signature. Tea, and sit down. The woman from three doors up returning a dish she borrowed a year ago. Tea, and how is your father.

He has done it his whole adult life without one moment of thought.

Here is what happened last month.

A neighbor came to the door about something to do with a wall, and they sorted it out standing up, and the man said thank you and went home, and it took about four minutes.

And afterwards he went back into the kitchen and stopped.

The kettle was cold.

He had not put it on. It had not even occurred to him to put it on, and it has not occurred to him for a while, and when he stood there and tried to remember the last time somebody had sat down in that courtyard with a glass in front of them, he could not.

Nothing has happened. There has been no falling out with anybody, no bad season, no reason at all. He is not a colder man than he was.

It is only that a thing his hands used to do without being told has quietly stopped, and he never once decided against it, and there was no afternoon that was the afternoon it stopped.

He has told nobody, because who would you tell, and what would you even call it.

If your kettle has been cold lately, come and sit down. This is not going to turn into a list.

The Cup He Stopped Offering

He does not break what is only bent

There is a description of the Messiah in Isaiah that Matthew later applies to Jesus directly, and it is one of the gentlest things in the Old Testament.

A bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench.Isaiah 42:3

Notice what both of those objects have in common. Neither of them is broken. A bruised reed is bent and still standing. A smoking wick is still alight, just barely, and both of them are exactly the sort of thing a busy person clears away because it is easier than dealing with it.

And the sentence says He does not.

That tells you the temperature of the One who has been drawing your attention to a cold kettle, and it is worth knowing the temperature before you decide what the message was.

You were shown this gently, and you were shown it early, and both of those are on purpose. Isaiah 42:3 puts the handling of anything bent or barely alight in the hands of somebody who does not break it, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries a word at exactly that temperature, which means what came to you in the kitchen was one kettle and not an accusation.

One. Not the whole house.

Now let me guard something, because I know what a conscientious man does next with a thing like this.

He goes looking for what else has lapsed. He starts asking whether the whole hospitality of the house has quietly gone, and what that says about him, and whether his mother would recognize the place.

Do not. That is where a gentleness becomes a project, and the project ends the same way every time: a long list, a heavy chest, and not one kettle actually put on.

Look at what you were actually given. Not an assessment of your household. Not a review of the last two years. One specific thing about one specific act, and then quiet. That restraint is the fingerprint of the One who did it.

You are being dealt with kindly, and you are not under inspection. Romans 2:4 says it is the kindness of God that leads a person, and it is His Spirit who carries it at the temperature a person can receive, so nothing in that kitchen was an alarm going off.

And here is the ground it stands on, which this site will not leave out.

You are being kept while you keep watch, and the noticing was never resting on your own alertness. Philippians 1:6 says the One who began a good work in you is carrying it through to completion, and it is the Holy Spirit who noticed a cold kettle you had stopped noticing, because God is the one keeping you and you are not standing this watch alone.

Nothing is broken. No neighbor has been offended and nobody in that street thinks less of your house. A kettle that stopped going on can go on this afternoon, and it costs nothing, and no living person ever needs to know why.

The breakthrough

Something is being handed to you here, in a courtyard or a kitchen or wherever you are reading this.

You are holding a kindness, and you are holding it early, and there is nothing broken in your hands. Lamentations 3:23 says His mercies are new every morning and great is His faithfulness, and it is the Spirit of God who timed this so that a thing which is nothing yet came up while it is still nothing, which is what mercy looks like when it works properly.

There is no story here and nobody has drifted anywhere. There is a cold kettle and a doorway and this afternoon.

That is not a small outcome. That is the whole outcome. A man who deals with one small thing while it is small never has to deal with a large thing late, and God arranged the timing of this, not you.

Declare this over yourself

You speak these as somebody handled gently by a God who does not break what is bent. The standing is given rather than earned, it is Christ's own and delegated, and it is the Spirit named in Philippians who is carrying the good work through rather than your alertness. What He grows out of one sentence is His to decide, so leave the outcome with Him and say what is true.

  1. Kettle that stopped going on, you are found and you are not a verdict on me. Isaiah says He does not break a bruised reed or put out a smoldering wick, and His Spirit brought me one thing and then went quiet. You are what I am putting back this afternoon.
  2. Urge to audit the whole house, you have no seat in this courtyard, and in the name of Jesus I set you out in the street. Scripture says it is the kindness of God that leads a person, and His Spirit carries it at the temperature a person can take. Nothing here is broken, and I am not opening an inspection on myself.
  3. Lord, You showed me this early and You showed me gently, and Your Spirit noticed a doorway I had stopped noticing. You are keeping me while I keep watch. What I see now I put back today, and I do it without alarm.
