The Chair That Stayed At The Table

Sixteen at that table on a good Sunday, and the man who cooks it all does not sit down until half of them have finished.

He knows everything about all of them. He knows which nephew is worried about his job and has not said so. He knows that his sister in law has been sleeping badly since the spring. He knows the exact thing you must not ask the youngest one about, and he knows which of the old ones will cry if the right song comes on, and he heads it off every time.

He is the reason that table exists. Everybody says so. Somebody proposed a toast to him at Christmas and he waved it off and went to get more bread.

Here is the thing he worked out one night with his hands in the sink and the courtyard empty.

Not one of those sixteen people knows a single true thing about him.

Not because he lies. He does not lie. He simply answers the question and turns it round, the way he has done for so long that it is not even a technique any more, it is his face. How are you, Santi. Good, good, eat something, how is your mother.

He is not lonely at that table. That is what makes it strange. He is surrounded, he is loved, he is the middle of it. And there is a whole man standing at that sink who nobody in his own family has met.

He has never once said that out loud, and it did not occur to him to be troubled by it until that night.

If you host everybody and are known by nobody, pull the chair out and sit down. Nothing here is going to become a confession.

The sharpening runs both directions

There is a proverb everybody can quote and almost nobody applies to themselves.

Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.Proverbs 27:17

Notice the picture. Two pieces of the same material. Not a blade and a whetstone, which would be a tool and a person who uses it. Two blades, and both of them are changed by the contact, and neither of them is the equipment.

You have spent years being the whetstone. Everybody at that table is sharper for knowing you, and you have quietly stepped out of the verse, because the verse describes something happening to both, and you have arranged your life so it only ever happens to them.

That is not humility. It looks exactly like humility, which is why nobody has ever challenged it, including you.

You were made to be known as well as to know, and that is provision rather than weakness in you. Proverbs 27:17 puts both pieces of iron in the same sentence, and it is the Holy Spirit who puts people alongside people in the first place, so needing somebody to know one true thing about you is the arrangement working rather than a fault in the host.

Being known is not the same as being handled

Now let me take away the thing you are actually afraid of, because it is not vulnerability in general.

You are afraid that if you say a true thing at that table, the table changes. That people start being careful with you. That the man who carries the evening becomes a thing the evening has to work around.

I understand that, and I am not going to pretend it is a silly fear. But look at the size of what is actually being asked here.

Not a confession. Not a group. Not an accountability arrangement, which this site does not hand anybody and I am not about to start. Not your interior life laid out on the table between the bread and the olives.

One person. One true sentence.

I have been tired in a way that sleep does not fix. I have not told anybody how the spring went for me. I am worried about something and I have not said it out loud yet.

That is the whole ask, and notice what it does not do. It does not make anybody responsible for you. It simply means a thing that existed only inside you now exists between two people, and at that moment there is somebody in the world who could notice.

You have permission to be carried as well as to carry, and it does not cost you the table. Galatians 6:2 says to bear one another's burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ, and the one another is doing the work in that sentence, and it is the Spirit who binds a people together, which means a host who lets one person in has not stopped being the host.

And here is the ground it all stands on. God is the one keeping you while you keep everybody else fed. You are already known completely, and you were never actually unseen at your own sink. Psalm 139:2 says He knows when you sit down and when you rise up and discerns your thoughts from far away, and it is His Spirit who has been in that courtyard every Sunday, so nobody knowing is not the same as nobody watching.
