The Hand That Went Hard On The Gate

Four houses, every Thursday, and he has been doing it for longer than most of the people who thank him for it have lived in the village.

The first is easy. She talks for an hour and he lets her. The second is the man with the dogs, who never says much and always shakes his hand at the door. The third is a couple who are both getting frail and who he worries about more than he lets on.

And the fourth is the one.

Not a bad man. Not unkind. Just very hard work, in the particular way that some people are hard work, which is that nothing you say goes anywhere and every conversation ends up in the same field it started in.

Three weeks ago he walked up that path and knocked, and there was a pause, and in that pause he caught himself thinking, quite clearly: please do not be in.

The door opened. He went in and had his tea and was perfectly kind for fifty minutes and left.

And he has not been able to get that pause out of his head since.

He is not proud of it. He would not tell you about it. He has been doing this since before it was a thing anybody organized, and he would tell you that he does it because it wants doing, and that is all true, and none of it touched what happened in that pause.

Something behind the hand that knocked has gone hard, and he does not know when, and he does not like it, and he has not said one word about it to a living soul.

If you have had a pause like that, come and sit in the front room a minute. Nobody is going to ask you to look inside yourself.

The guarding of a heart is a posting, not an inspection

There is a promise in Philippians that gets read as a lovely sentiment and is actually a military word.

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.Philippians 4:7

Guard there is a garrison word. Soldiers posted on a wall. It is not describing a feeling that comes over somebody, it is describing a thing stationed round a person.

And notice who is doing the standing. Not you. The peace of God is doing it, and it is doing it in Christ Jesus, which means the position was given rather than earned.

That matters enormously for a man who has just found something in himself that he does not like, because his instinct is to go in and sort it out personally.

You are being guarded on the inside, and there has been something posted round you the whole time. Philippians 4:7 puts the garrison in God's hands and locates it in Christ, and it is the Holy Spirit who is called the seal on that in Ephesians 1:13, so the ugly pause on that path did not happen in an undefended place. It happened inside a keeping you did not arrange.

A hard patch is a callus, not a verdict

Now let me say the plain thing, because a decent man in a front room has usually already convicted himself.

What you found in that pause is not proof that you have gone bad. It is very often proof that you have been used.

Years of Thursdays is a long time. Hands that do the same work for decades go hard on the outside so the work can carry on, and no reasonable person reads a farmer's palms as a moral failing. Hearts do a version of the same thing, and Scripture treats it as something to be healed rather than something to be tried.

Ezekiel has God saying I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you, and I will take away the heart of stone. Every one of those verbs is His. The person in that verse is not asked to soften themselves first, and it is not written to people who have failed.

You have a God who takes the inside of a man as His own responsibility, and He deals with it as a gift. Ezekiel 36:26 puts the whole transaction in God's hands, and the next verse names His Spirit put within you as the one who does it, which means what you found on that path is a thing He heals rather than a charge He files.

So we are not going in there tonight. There is no examination coming, no inventory, no working out when it started. This site does not hand anybody a self audit and I am not about to begin.

You are going to hand one thing over. That is all.

You have somewhere to put this, and you are allowed to put it there today. 1 Peter 5:7 says to cast your anxiety on Him because He cares for you, and it is His Spirit who makes that a real transaction rather than a sentiment, so the hardness you found on that path has an address and it is not your own chest.

And underneath the whole of it: God is the one keeping your heart while you keep watch over it. You have never been standing guard over yourself alone on a garden path.
