The Porch Light Across The Holler

Eleven years at the end of that road, and she has got it down to a system.

The freezer is full and it stays full. The wood is in by August. She has a list on the back of the door of who to ring for what and she has never once had to use most of it. She had the porch step fixed before it needed fixing and she got somebody to look at the roof last spring for no reason except that it had been a while.

She is seventy nine.

Nobody worries about her. That is the achievement, and it is an achievement, and she has worked at it deliberately since the year after her husband died.

Here is what she saw a few weeks ago, sitting out on that porch in the evening looking across at the light on the Mullins place.

She has arranged a life that nobody needs to check on.

And she thought: I did that on purpose. I have spent eleven years making sure I would not be a trouble to a living soul, and it has worked, and now there is not one person on this road who would think to come up here if the light did not go on.

Not because they are unkind. They are lovely, all of them. It is that she has trained them, patiently, for over a decade, in the fact that she is fine.

She has never said one word about this to anybody, and she would be mortified if anybody read it back to her.

If you have made yourself untroubling, come and sit on the step. Nothing here is going to become an arrangement.

Two is the design, not the concession

There is a passage in Ecclesiastes that gets read at weddings, which is a shame, because it is a hard eyed look at how a person actually gets through a life.

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil.Ecclesiastes 4:9

Look at what he leads with. Not falling. Not danger. Toil, which is ordinary work on ordinary days, and the reward is described as belonging to both of them.

The falling comes in the next verse, almost as an afterthought, and then cold, and then somebody who might overpower you. The togetherness is the arrangement. The emergencies are simply some of the things the arrangement turns out to be good for.

Which means being watched over was never something a person earns by being in trouble.

That matters for you specifically, because you have built a life on the opposite reading. If company is for people who cannot manage, then managing becomes a reason to be left alone, and eleven years of managing beautifully has trained a whole road to leave you to it.

You were made to be kept alongside somebody, and that is provision rather than an imposition on anyone. Ecclesiastes 4:9 puts the second person into the ordinary toil before any falling is mentioned, and it is the Holy Spirit who sets people alongside people in the first place, so being checked on is the design working rather than a failure of your competence.

Nobody is asking you to need anything

Now let me take the real obstacle off the table, because it is not pride and it is not fear.

It is manners. You were raised not to be a trouble, and being a trouble is, in your ordering of things, close to the worst available outcome, and eleven years of not being one is the accomplishment you are quietly proudest of.

So notice that nothing here asks you to need anybody.

Not a rota. Not somebody checking on you, which this site would not propose anyway. Not a system, not an arrangement, not a phone tree.

One person. One true sentence.

I have made sure nobody needs to check on me and I did it on purpose. I am perfectly all right, and I would still like one person to know how I actually am. If my porch light did not go on one night, I would like you to be the one who noticed.

That is the whole ask, and look at what it does not do. It does not make anybody responsible for you. It simply means a thing that lived only inside you now lives between two people, and from that moment there is somebody who could notice.

You have permission to be watched over, and it costs the other person nothing you would mind them spending. Galatians 6:2 says to bear one another's burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ, and the one another is doing the work in that sentence, and it is the Spirit who binds a people together, which means a woman who lets one person in has not become a trouble to anybody.

And here is the ground it stands on. God is the one keeping you while you keep that house in order. You are already known completely, and you were never actually unwatched on that porch. Psalm 139:3 says He is acquainted with all your ways, and it is His Spirit who has been at the end of that road every evening, so nobody checking is not the same as nobody watching.
