Friends Who WatchProverbs 18:24

The Man At The Back Of The Room

This message is for the man who knows two hundred people well enough to have a warm conversation with any of them and has slowly realized he does not have one person he could ring at midnight

He is very good in a room. That is not vanity, it is just true, and everybody who knows him would say it.

He remembers names. He remembers the thing you told him eight months ago about your sister. He can talk to a nineteen year old and a man of eighty in the same five minutes and both of them go away feeling like the interesting one.

Two hundred people, easily, that he knows properly.

Here is what happened at about one in the morning a few weeks back.

Nothing dramatic. He could not sleep, and he was sitting on the stairs with a glass of water, in that particular flat hour, and for no reason at all he thought: if this were an actual bad night, who would I ring.

He went through them. He is a thorough man and he went through a lot of them.

And what he found was that he could ring almost anybody, and would be welcomed, and would be listened to, and would be perfectly all right.

And that he would not ring any of them, because none of them is somebody he could ring.

There is a difference and he could not get away from it. Two hundred good conversations is not one person who knows the whole shape of you and would not need to be caught up first.

He went back to bed. He has thought about it most days since.

He has told nobody, obviously, because the only people he could tell are the two hundred.

If you have sat on a stair and worked that out, come in and pull up a chair. Nothing here is going to become a project.

The Man At The Back Of The Room

The proverb is about quality, not headcount

There is a proverb that reads oddly in most translations until you see what it is doing.

A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.Proverbs 18:24

It is not a warning against being sociable. It is a contrast between two quantities, and the second one is smaller and heavier.

Many companions, and then one who sticks. And the word for sticks is a joining word, the same sort of word used about things bound together so that they do not come apart, and it is set specifically against a large number of pleasant associations.

That is not a rebuke of your two hundred. Your two hundred are good and they are real and half that hall is better for them.

It is simply Scripture noticing, several thousand years before you sat on a stair, that those two things are different, and that a person needs the second one.

You were made to be joined to somebody, and that is provision rather than an admission of failure. Proverbs 18:24 puts the sticking friend into the design rather than into the emergency plan, and it is the Holy Spirit who sets people alongside people in the first place, which means wanting one is not a defect in a man who is good in a room.

One person and one true sentence is where this starts

Now let me take the real obstacle off the table, because I do not think it is that you cannot make friends.

You are very good at the first ninety per cent. The obstacle is that the last ten per cent has never been asked of you, because you have arranged, without ever intending to, to be the one who does the asking, and two hundred people have gratefully let you.

So the move is not to find a new person. You have plenty of people. The move is to say one true thing to one of the ones you already have.

Not a group. Not an accountability arrangement, which this site does not hand anybody and I am not about to start. Not the whole of the stairs at one in the morning.

One sentence.

I sat on the stairs at one in the morning and worked out that I do not have anybody I would ring. I am fine, and I have realized I do not let anybody past a certain point. I would like you to be somebody who knows how I actually am.

That is the entire ask. It makes nobody responsible for you. It simply means a thing that lived only inside you now lives between two people, and from that moment there is somebody who could notice.

You have permission to be known rather than only liked, and it costs you nothing you actually had. Galatians 6:2 says to bear one another's burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ, and the one another is doing the work in that sentence, and it is the Spirit who binds a people together, which means the man who is good in a room does not lose the room by letting one person all the way in.

And here is the ground it all stands on. God is the one keeping you while you keep two hundred conversations going. You are already known completely, and you were never actually alone on that stair. Psalm 139:2 says He knows when you sit down and when you rise up and discerns your thoughts from far away, and it is His Spirit who was in that hallway at one in the morning, so nobody knowing is not the same as nobody watching.

The breakthrough

Something is on offer here, in a hall or on a stair or wherever you are reading this.

You are not doing this unwitnessed, and you have not been overlooked on a single one of those nights. Hebrews 10:24 says to consider how to stir one another up to love and good works, and the sentence assumes people who know something about each other, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been arranging exactly that for you long before you noticed you wanted it.

Nothing has to be dismantled. The two hundred stay. The room stays. You do not have to become a different man on a Thursday evening.

You need one person to know one true thing, and then a bad night becomes a night with a number in it. That is not a defeat. That is a friend who sticks, and God put that in the design, not in the emergency plan.

Declare this over yourself

You speak these as somebody already known and already kept. The people were given to you rather than earned, the standing is Christ's own and delegated, and it is the Spirit named in Galatians who binds anybody to anybody. What God does with one true sentence is His to decide, so leave the outcome with Him and simply say what is true.

  1. Last ten per cent nobody ever asked for, you are not a wall and you were never meant to be one. Proverbs puts a friend who sticks closer than a brother into the design rather than the emergency plan, and the Spirit is the one who joins people together. You are what I am putting down this week.
  2. Idea that being liked is enough, you have no chair in this hall, and in the name of Jesus I set you outside the door. Scripture says to bear one another's burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ, and His Spirit binds that company together. Being known is provision and not an admission of anything.
  3. Father, You know when I sit down and when I rise, and Your Spirit was on that stair at one in the morning with me. You gave me people so that I am not doing this unwitnessed. Somebody is going to know one true thing, and that is Your provision.
