The Name Of Every Rock In The Channel

This message is for the man who was taught the safe line through a rocky channel by an uncle who is dead, has used it a thousand times, and has stopped thinking of it as something he was given rather than something he simply knows

There are eleven rocks in that channel that will take the bottom out of a boat, and he knows every one of them.

Not from a chart. Nobody ever drew them properly. He knows them the way you know your own stairs, and he can run that line at a decent speed in a chop when the water is opaque and there is nothing to see at all.

His uncle showed him. Four days, when he was fifteen, going up and down that channel until it was in his hands rather than his head. His uncle was not a patient man and did not explain much, and at the end of the fourth day he said something short and got out of the boat and never mentioned it again.

He is dead now. Twenty two years.

And here is what came at the man in the boat a couple of weeks ago, sitting with the engine idling waiting for a swell to pass.

He does not think of that line as something he was given.

He thinks of it as something he knows. Like his own name. Like the way he ties a knot. It has become a property of himself, and the four days and the impatience and the short sentence at the end have all quietly slid out from underneath it.

Nothing is wrong. He has not lost the line. He would get you through that channel on the blackest night of the year.

It is only that he stood there realizing he had not thought about his uncle in relation to it in years, and that a thing which was handed to him has turned into a thing he simply has.

If something you carry has become just a property of yourself, come and sit on the jetty. Nothing here is an alarm.

The Name Of Every Rock In The Channel

Guarding is done by somebody else strength

Let me put a word back where it started, because ordinary use wears everything smooth.

In the world Paul wrote into, a deposit was serious and completely everyday. Somebody going on a journey left a valuable thing with a neighbor. No paperwork, no insurance, nothing to enforce it. Two hands and one person's honor, and two rules that did not bend: it never became the keeper's property, and it went back in the condition it came in.

Never became the keeper's property. Read that one again, because it is exactly the line you have quietly crossed with a channel.

By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.2 Timothy 1:14

And notice the other thing in that verse, which is the half nobody quotes. Paul does not tell a frightened young man to hold on tighter. He names the strength, and the strength is not Timothy's.

You are not holding this on your own, and you never have been. 2 Timothy 1:14 puts the guarding inside the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, which means twenty two years of never losing a line was not twenty two years of your memory.

What thinned is your seeing, not the thing itself

Now the second half, and it is the one I want you to hear with the engine idling.

Something was put into your hands on purpose. That is the fact that a thousand ordinary crossings have hidden, and it is nobody's fault, because a man who is watching a swell does not stop to consider where his hands learned what they are doing.

You were handed a real thing, and you are still holding it this morning. 2 Timothy 1:5 names a grandmother out loud before it names Timothy, so Scripture is entirely comfortable with a trust that arrives through a specific person on a specific set of days, and it is His Spirit who is the guarantee in Ephesians 1:14, which means what has gone quiet is your noticing rather than the thing itself.

Notice what is not on the list of what you were given. Not a feeling. A deposit is not an atmosphere. You can hold a thing perfectly on a morning it means nothing to you at all, and a keeper who guards only what he currently feels is not a keeper.

And notice what that moment in the boat actually was. You have been shown this early, and you were shown it gently, and nothing has been broken. Romans 2:4 says it is the kindness of God that leads a person, and it is His Spirit who carries that kindness at exactly the temperature a person can take, which is why it came as one thought about an uncle and not a review of your whole character.

Now the half that makes the watching restful rather than nervous, because this site refuses to run the second without the first.

You are the one being kept, and that has been true on every crossing you made without thinking about it. 1 Peter 1:5 says you are guarded by the power of God, and it is the Holy Spirit who is the seal, so the arrangement has never once rested on how attentive you were being.

Both hands in this belong to God. He is holding what you gave Him, and He is holding you while you hold what He gave you. A man who thinks he is the only thing between a family and eleven rocks cannot rest, and you were never the only thing.

The breakthrough

Something is here for you, on a jetty or in a boat or wherever you are reading this.

You have a good deposit and you have it today, and its going quiet has changed nothing about what it is. Romans 11:29 says the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable, and it is His Spirit who is the guarantee, which means nothing has expired while you were busy being capable.

There is no crisis here and nothing to recover. There is a channel and eleven rocks and a man who can see again that somebody stood in a boat with him for four days.

So put one ordinary thing back. Not a scheme, not a fresh start with a name. One ordinary thing that quietly stopped and was never actually decided against.

Declare this over yourself

You speak these as somebody handed a real thing on purpose. It was given to you rather than earned by you, the standing is Christ's own and delegated, and it is the Spirit named in 2 Timothy 1 who does the keeping rather than your memory. What God grows out of one crossing is His business, so leave the outcome with Him and simply say what is true.

  1. Line I think I simply know, you are not a property of mine and you never were. Paul says to guard the good deposit by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, and that is the strength that has been in my hands the whole time. You are the shape of four days somebody gave me.
  2. Notion that this came from nobody, you have no place on this water, and in the name of Jesus I put you off the jetty. Scripture says I am guarded by the power of God, and His Spirit is the seal on everything He hands over. What is in my hands is real, and it was given rather than earned.
  3. Lord, You are holding what I entrusted to You and You are holding me while I keep what You put into my hands. Your Spirit has been the strength on every crossing. I keep what I was given, and I keep it without fear.
