The Recipe In His Grandmothers Hand

The card is in a tin in the third drawer and it is falling apart along the folds.

Her handwriting. Half the quantities are wrong because she never measured anything and wrote down what she thought she probably did. There is a line near the bottom that nobody in the family has ever been able to read and there is an ongoing forty year argument about what it says.

He makes it once a year, for the whole lot of them, and it takes most of a day.

He was chosen for it. That is the part that matters and that is the part that has gone.

He was nineteen and she was very old, and she asked for him specifically, out of eleven grandchildren, and stood him in front of a pan and made him do it twice while she sat down and criticized. And at the end of the second one she said something he has never repeated to anybody, and then she said, right, that is yours now.

Twenty six years.

He has not missed one. He has made it in three different houses and once, memorably, on a camping stove.

But somewhere in twenty six years the whole thing turned into the job he happens to have.

He starts it now the way you start any long task. There is a list. There is an order. There is a point about four hours in where his back hurts and somebody asks him a question and he is short with them.

And a few weeks ago, chopping, he thought: I have been doing her thing for a quarter of a century and I have stopped knowing that she chose me.

If something you inherited has become an obligation, come and sit in the courtyard. Nothing here is an alarm.

It lived in them before it lived in you

Paul writes something to a young man that is not an argument and is not a doctrine. It is a memory, and he puts it right at the front of the letter.

I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.2 Timothy 1:5

Dwelt first in your grandmother. Paul knew her name.

And then, two verses later, he tells Timothy to fan into flame the gift of God that is in him, and seven verses after that he tells him to guard the good deposit by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us. The whole opening of that letter is one movement: this came to you through people, it is real, keep it, and you do not keep it on your own strength.

That is what happened to you in front of a pan when you were nineteen.

You were chosen on purpose, and what came down to you is still a trust in your hands. 2 Timothy 1:5 names a grandmother out loud before it names the young man, and 2 Timothy 1:14 names the Holy Spirit as the strength inside the guarding, which means twenty six years of not missing one has not been twenty six years of your obligation.

The thing did not shrink because your feeling for it did

Now the second half, and it is the one to hear standing over a pan.

Something was put into your hands deliberately. That is the fact twenty six ordinary years have hidden, and the hiding is nobody's fault, because a man who is chopping onions at seven in the morning with a list in his head is not in a position to feel the weight of a choosing that happened when he was nineteen.

You were handed a real thing, and you are still holding it today. Romans 11:29 says the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable, and it is the Holy Spirit who is named as the seal and guarantee in Ephesians 1:13, which means what has gone quiet is your noticing rather than the thing itself.

Notice what is not on the list of things you inherited. Not a feeling. A deposit is not an atmosphere. You can hold a thing perfectly on a day when it means nothing to you, and a keeper who guards only what he currently feels is not a keeper, he is a mood.

And notice that the moment you had while chopping was not a complaint arriving. You have been shown this early, and you were shown it gently, and nothing has been broken. Romans 2:4 says it is the kindness of God that leads a person, and it is His Spirit who carries that kindness at exactly the temperature a person can take, which is why what came was one thought about a nineteen year old and not a review of your character.

Now the half that makes the watching restful rather than nervous, because this site refuses to run the second without the first.

You are the one being kept, and that has been true every year you were too busy to think about it. 1 Peter 1:5 says you are guarded by the power of God, and it is the Holy Spirit who is the guarantee, so the arrangement has never rested on how attentive you were being.

Both hands in this belong to God. He is holding what you entrusted to Him and He is holding you while you hold what He entrusted to you. A man who thinks he is the only thing standing between a family and losing something cannot rest, and you were never the only thing.
