A Guarded Heart1 Peter 5:7

The Welcome That Comes Out Flat

This message is for the woman who has welcomed newcomers into a room for years and has noticed that she now hopes, briefly, that nobody new will come, and is troubled by what that says about her

She has been doing the door for eleven years and she is the reason a lot of people stayed.

That is not a boast and she would never say it. It is simply what people say about her when she is not in the room. She notices a face she does not know from about forty feet, she gets there before they have finished looking at the floor, and she does the whole thing without ever once making anybody feel like a project.

She takes them for a coffee. She introduces them to exactly one person, never three. She remembers.

Here is what happened five weeks ago and it has stayed with her since.

She was standing near the doors, coffee in hand, and a young couple came in who were obviously new, and she felt herself register them, and for about a second and a half something in her said: oh, not today.

That was all. She went over. She was warm and she was good and they came back the following week and are still coming.

Nobody saw a thing.

But she has not been able to put down that second and a half, because she has built eleven years on being a woman who is glad when the door opens, and something in her was not glad, and she does not know what to do with that.

She has told nobody. There is not a natural way to say it that does not sound like she is asking to be talked out of it.

If you have caught something like that in yourself, come and sit down with a coffee. Nobody is going to ask you to look inside yourself.

The Welcome That Comes Out Flat

The casting is yours, the caring is His

Let me put the verdict down first, because you passed one on yourself by the doors five weeks ago and it has been standing ever since.

A second and a half is not a character. It is a second and a half.

And more to the point, Scripture does not treat what surfaces in a tired person as a charge to be answered. It gives them somewhere to put it.

Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.1 Peter 5:7

Look at how the labor is divided in that sentence. The casting is yours. The caring is His. You are not asked to resolve the thing, or explain it, or promise anything about next Sunday. You are asked to throw it, and the reason given is not that you ought to but that He cares.

You have somewhere to put this, and you are allowed to put it there today. 1 Peter 5:7 makes the casting a real transaction rather than a feeling, and it is the Holy Spirit whom Jesus called the Helper precisely because help was always going to be needed, which means what you felt by the doors has an address and it is not your own chest.

Guarding your heart is protecting a spring

Now the second thing, and it keeps a tired woman out of a trap she is standing right beside.

Proverbs says keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life, and almost everybody hears that as an instruction to go inside and look for what is wrong.

It is not. The word is a guarding word, the sort you use about something valuable, and the picture in the same breath is a spring in the ground. Nobody stands over a spring with a clipboard. You keep the leaves out and you do not let anybody build on top of it. That is the job.

You are not being asked to audit yourself, and you never were. Proverbs 4:23 hands you a spring to protect rather than a self to interrogate, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the protecting from the inside, which is why eleven years of doors have never once required an inspection to stay warm.

So we are not going in there today. No inventory, no working out what the second and a half meant, no deciding what sort of woman has moments like that. Every woman who has done the door for eleven years has moments like that, and the ones who say they do not are not paying attention.

And Ezekiel has God saying I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. Every verb is His. Nobody in that verse is asked to produce better feelings first in order to qualify for anything.

You are being dealt with as somebody God renews rather than somebody God assesses. Ezekiel 36:26 puts the whole transaction in His hands, and the next verse names His Spirit put within you as the one who does it.

And under all of it: God is the one keeping your heart while you keep watch over it. You have not been standing guard over yourself alone by a set of doors.

The breakthrough

Something is on offer here, in a hall or a kitchen or wherever you are reading this.

You have a God who took the inside of you as His own responsibility, and He took it long before five weeks ago. Philippians 4:7 says the peace of God guards your heart and mind in Christ Jesus, and that guard is a garrison word, and it is the Holy Spirit who posts it, which means something has been standing round your inside on every one of those Sunday mornings.

Nothing has to be diagnosed today. No inventory is coming and you will not be asked to explain the second and a half, partly because you cannot and partly because it does not matter for what comes next.

There is one thing you did not like the look of, and there is a God nearer to it than you are, and there is a way of putting it into His hands that does not require you to understand it first. That is what is here, and it is enough today and it will still be enough on Sunday.

Declare this over yourself

You speak these as somebody standing in a place given to you rather than earned. The authority is Christ's own and delegated, and it is the Spirit named in Ezekiel and Philippians who guards the inside rather than your own watchfulness. What God renews, and when, is His to decide, so leave the outcome with Him and simply say what is true.

  1. Second and a half by those doors, you are named and you are not a verdict on me. Ezekiel says God gives a new heart Himself and puts His Spirit within, so this is His to renew rather than mine to investigate. You are the one thing I am handing over today.
  2. Fear that eleven years used up my welcome, you have no place in this hall, and in the name of Jesus I set you outside the doors. Scripture says to cast it on Him because He cares, and His Spirit carries it across for me. Hoping it is not the same as wanting it, and it is not the same as leaving.
  3. Father, You keep my heart and You keep it kindly, and Your Spirit has been standing round my inside on every Sunday by those doors. What is in me is Yours to guard. I am not on watch over myself alone, and I hand You this one thing now.
