A Guarded HeartPhilippians 4:7

The Lamp He Trims Without Looking

This message is for the man who has read the same passage aloud at his own table every week for years and has begun to notice that his mouth does it while he is somewhere else entirely

Every week at that table he reads the same thing.

It is not long. Four or five verses, at the same point in the evening, and the whole table goes quiet for it, including the small ones, who have been trained by nothing except the fact that everybody else does.

Years of this. He could not now tell you when it started.

Here is what happened three weeks ago, and nobody in that room saw a thing.

He was reading, and he was about halfway through, and he became aware that he was thinking about a conversation he had had that afternoon with somebody about a fence.

His mouth was doing the verses. Correctly. At the right pace, with the pause in the right place, and he had not stumbled once.

And he was not in the room.

He finished. He put the book down. Nobody noticed anything and the evening went on and it was a good evening.

But he has thought about it every week since, because he has caught it happening twice more, and he has begun to suspect that it has been going on far longer than three weeks and that he only noticed because for once he was paying enough attention to notice that he was not paying attention.

Nothing is wrong. He is not going through the motions in any sense that anybody watching would recognize.

He has told nobody, because there is no way to say it that does not sound like an accusation against his own house.

If your mouth has been doing something without you, come and sit down at this table. Nobody is going to ask you to examine yourself.

The Lamp He Trims Without Looking

The garrison was posted before you noticed anything

There is a promise in Philippians that gets read as a lovely feeling and is actually a military word.

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.Philippians 4:7

Guard is a garrison word. Soldiers stationed on a wall. It is not describing something that settles over a person like weather. It is describing something posted round them, doing a job.

And notice the two things it guards. Hearts and minds. Paul puts the mind inside the same protection as the heart, which is worth having when the thing you have caught is your attention rather than your affection.

Notice also who is doing the standing. The peace of God, in Christ Jesus. The position was given rather than achieved, and it was not achieved by concentrating.

You are being guarded on the inside, and something was posted round you long before three weeks ago. Philippians 4:7 puts the garrison in God's hands and locates it in Christ, and it is the Holy Spirit who is named as the seal on that in Ephesians 1:13, so the moment you caught at that table did not happen in an undefended place.

A wandering mind is not a verdict

Now let me say the plain thing, because a man at a table is quick to convict himself and there is nothing here to convict.

A mind that goes somewhere else during a thing it has done a thousand times is not evidence of a cooled heart. It is evidence of a well learned act.

That is how attention works. Your body takes over anything you have done enough times, precisely so that your mind is free, and it does not consult you about it, and every driver and every musician and every mother knows this and nobody calls it insincerity.

And Scripture treats the inside of a person as something God attends to rather than something a man is tried for.

Ezekiel has God saying I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. Every verb is His, and it is not addressed to people who have failed.

You have a God who takes the inside of you as His own responsibility, and He deals with it as a gift. Ezekiel 36:26 puts the whole transaction in God's hands, and the next verse names His Spirit put within you as the one who does it, which means what you caught at that table is a thing He tends rather than a charge He files.

So we are not going in there tonight. No inventory, no working out how long it has been happening, no deciding what it means about the last few years of your household. This site does not hand anybody a self examination.

You are going to hand one thing over, and that is the whole move.

You have somewhere to put this, and you are allowed to put it there today. 1 Peter 5:7 says to cast your anxiety on Him because He cares for you, and it is His Spirit who makes that an actual transaction rather than a sentiment, so what you found has an address and it is not your own chest.

And under all of it: God is the one keeping your heart while you keep watch over it. You have not been standing guard over yourself alone at the head of a table.

The breakthrough

Something is on this table for you, at a meal or wherever you are reading this.

You have a heart and a mind that God took responsibility for, and He took them long before you caught anything. Philippians 4:7 says the peace of God guards your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus, and it is the Holy Spirit who posts that guard, which means something has been standing round the inside of you at every one of those readings.

Nothing has to be diagnosed today. No inventory is coming and you will not be asked to work out how long it has been happening, partly because you cannot and partly because it does not matter for what comes next.

There is one thing you noticed, and there is a God nearer to it than you are, and there is a way of putting it into His hands that does not require you to understand it first. That is what is here, and it is enough tonight and it will still be enough next week.

Declare this over yourself

You speak these as somebody standing in a place given to you rather than earned. The authority is Christ's own and delegated, and it is the Spirit named in Ezekiel and Philippians who guards the inside rather than your concentration. What God tends, and when, is His to decide, so leave the outcome with Him and simply say what is true.

  1. Fence I was thinking about mid verse, you are named and you are not a verdict on me. Ezekiel says God gives a new heart Himself and puts His Spirit within, so this is His to tend rather than mine to investigate. You are the one thing I am handing over tonight.
  2. Suspicion that my house has gone hollow, you have no chair at this table, and in the name of Jesus I set you outside the door. Scripture says the peace of God guards hearts and minds in Christ Jesus, and His Spirit posted that guard before I noticed anything. A well learned act is not a cooled one.
  3. Lord, You keep my heart and my mind and You keep them kindly, and Your Spirit has been standing round the inside of me at every reading. What is in me is Yours to guard. I am not on watch over myself alone, and I hand You this one thing now.
