A Guarded HeartProverbs 4:23

The Word He Holds Back Now

This message is for the man who used to say the encouraging thing out loud without thinking and now finds himself checking it first, and does not know when the checking started

He used to say it. That is the whole of what has changed.

If somebody did a thing well he said so, out loud, on the spot, in front of whoever was standing there. If a young one played something on that beach and got it right, he said it. If a woman had held a family together through a hard winter he told her, and he did not make a speech of it, he just said the sentence and carried on eating.

Everybody who grew up round that fire has one of those sentences in them somewhere.

Now he checks first.

Not for long. Half a second, maybe. But there is a small pause in him now between the thing arriving and the thing being said, and in that pause something asks whether it will land right, whether it is the sort of thing he says, whether he is the right person, whether it is too much.

And quite often, by the time he has finished checking, the moment has gone and somebody else is talking.

Nothing happened. He was not humiliated once and it did not go wrong on him. There is no incident. He has looked for one, because a man wants a reason, and there is not one.

He noticed it three weeks ago at a gathering exactly like this one, when a lad played something and got it right, and he thought the sentence and did not say it.

He has told nobody, and there is not an obvious way to.

If a guard has gone up in you between the thinking and the saying, come and sit down on the sand. Nobody is going to ask you to look inside yourself.

The Word He Holds Back Now

Guarding is protecting a spring, not policing a self

There is a verse everybody knows and almost everybody hears as a call to self examination.

Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.Proverbs 4:23

Most people picture a man walking round inside himself with a lamp looking for what is wrong.

But the word behind keep is a guarding word, the sort used about something valuable, and the picture in the same breath is a spring in the ground. What is being guarded is a source. And what comes out of a spring is meant to come out. Nobody protects a spring by putting a lid on it.

That matters here, because something in you has quietly put a lid on it, and it has done that in the name of care.

You are not being asked to police what comes out of you, and you never were. Proverbs 4:23 hands you a spring to protect rather than an output to filter, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the protecting from the inside, which is why years of saying the sentence on the spot never once required a check to be good.

A guard is not a verdict

Now the second thing, and it matters because a man on a beach is quick to convict himself.

A half second pause between the thought and the word is not evidence that you have gone cautious or cold. It is far more often a callus, and calluses grow where something has been used.

You have said the good thing out loud, unprotected, for a very long time. Every one of those sentences cost a little. Not much. But a small cost paid several thousand times will eventually produce a small protective movement, and the movement arrives before your mind is consulted, which is exactly why you cannot find an incident.

And Scripture treats the inside of a person as something God undertakes rather than something a man is tried for.

Ezekiel has God saying I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. Every verb is His, and the promise is not addressed to people who have failed.

You have a God who takes the inside of you as His own responsibility, and He deals with it as a gift. Ezekiel 36:26 puts the whole transaction in God's hands, and the next verse names His Spirit put within you as the one who does it, which means the guard on that beach is something He tends rather than something He files.

So we are not going in there today. No inventory, no hunting for the incident, no working out what year the pause began. This site does not hand anybody a self examination.

You are going to hand one thing over, and that is the whole move.

You have somewhere to put this, and you are allowed to put it there today. 1 Peter 5:7 says to cast your anxiety on Him because He cares for you, and it is His Spirit who makes that an actual transaction rather than a sentiment, so the half second has an address and it is not your own chest.

And under all of it: God is the one keeping your heart while you keep watch over it. You have not been standing guard over yourself alone on a beach.

The breakthrough

Something is on offer here, on the sand or wherever you are reading this.

You have a heart that God took responsibility for, and He took it long before the pause showed up. Philippians 4:7 says the peace of God guards your heart and mind in Christ Jesus, and that guard is a garrison word, and it is the Holy Spirit who posts it, which means something has been standing round your inside on every one of those evenings.

Nothing has to be diagnosed today. No inventory is coming, and you will not be asked to explain the half second, partly because you cannot and partly because it does not matter for what comes next.

There is one small guard, and there is a God who is nearer to it than you are, and there is a way of putting it into His hands that does not require you to understand it first. That is what is here, and it is enough tonight and it will still be enough at the next gathering.

Declare this over yourself

You speak these as somebody standing in a place given to you rather than earned. The authority is Christ's own and delegated, and it is the Spirit named in Ezekiel and Philippians who guards the inside rather than your own watchfulness. What God tends, and when, is His to decide, so leave the outcome with Him and simply say what is true.

  1. Half second I check in now, you are named and you are not a verdict on me. Ezekiel says God gives a new heart Himself and puts His Spirit within, so this is His to tend rather than mine to investigate. You are the one thing I am handing over tonight.
  2. Search for the incident that started it, you have no place round this fire, and in the name of Jesus I set you out past the mats. Scripture says the peace of God garrisons the heart in Christ Jesus, and His Spirit has been posted round mine the whole time. A callus is not a verdict on the hand.
  3. Father, You keep my heart and You keep it kindly, and Your Spirit has been standing round my inside at every gathering on this beach. What is in me is Yours to guard. I am not on watch over myself alone, and I hand You this one thing now.
