The Place She Walks Past Now

This message is for the woman who used to stop at one particular gate on her walk to pray and now walks past it, and who has noticed that something in her flinches slightly as she goes by

There is a gate about two thirds of the way up that hill, and for years she stopped at it.

Not for the view, although the view is the reason anybody else stops. She stopped because the gate is where she prayed. She would lean on the top bar with her elbows and say things she did not say anywhere else, and then she would climb the stile and carry on and come home lighter.

Years of that. Enough years that her family would say, if you were looking for her, she is up at the gate.

She still does the walk. Same route, same three mornings a week.

She goes past the gate now.

Not deliberately. There was no morning where she decided the gate was finished. It is more that at some point she arrived at it and did not stop, and then that happened again, and now she goes by it at the same pace as the rest of the path.

And here is the part she has actually noticed, and it is the only reason this is worth mentioning at all.

Something in her flinches as she goes past.

Very slight. Less than a thought. A sort of small pulling in of the shoulders, the way you go past a house where something happened.

Nothing happened at that gate. Nothing bad has ever happened there. It is a gate on a hill and she has prayed some of the happiest prayers of her life leaning on it.

She has told nobody. It sounds like nothing when you say it out loud, and it also sounds like something, and she does not know which.

If you have started walking past a place in your own life, come and lean on this bar a minute. Nobody is going to ask you to look inside yourself.

The Place She Walks Past Now

Peace stands guard. You do not.

There is a promise in Philippians that gets read as a lovely feeling and is actually a military posting.

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.Philippians 4:7

Guard there is a garrison word. Soldiers on a wall. It is not describing an atmosphere that settles on somebody. It is describing something stationed round a person, doing a job.

And notice two things about who is where. The peace is doing the standing. And the location is in Christ Jesus, which means the position was given rather than achieved.

That matters enormously for a woman who has felt something small and unaccountable in herself and whose instinct is to go in and sort it out personally.

You are being guarded on the inside, and something has been posted round you the whole time. Philippians 4:7 puts the garrison in God's hands and locates it in Christ, and it is the Holy Spirit who is named as the seal on that in Ephesians 1:13, so whatever the flinch is, it did not happen in an undefended place.

A flinch is not a verdict

Now the second thing, and it keeps a thoughtful woman out of a trap.

You have half assumed that a small unaccountable reaction is evidence of something wrong underneath, and that the job now is to find out what.

But hearts do a great many things for reasons that are not moral. A place where a person has been very open is a place that carries weight, and weight can be tiring, and a body will sometimes begin to protect a person from a thing that costs them without asking the person's permission first. That is not sin. That is a body doing what bodies do.

And Scripture treats the inside of a person as something God attends to, not something a person is tried for.

Ezekiel has God saying I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. Every verb is His, and it is not addressed to people who have failed.

You have a God who takes the inside of you as His own responsibility, and He deals with it as a gift. Ezekiel 36:26 puts the whole transaction in God's hands, and the next verse names His Spirit put within you as the one who does it, which means the flinch on that path is something He tends rather than something He files.

So we are not going in there this morning. There is no inventory coming and no working out what the gate means. This site does not hand anybody a self examination.

You are going to hand one thing over, and that is the whole move.

You have somewhere to put this, and you are allowed to put it there today. 1 Peter 5:7 says to cast your anxiety on Him because He cares for you, and it is His Spirit who makes that an actual transaction rather than a sentiment, so the small pulling in of your shoulders has an address and it is not your own chest.

And under all of it: God is the one keeping your heart while you keep watch over it. You have never been standing guard over yourself alone on a hillside.

The breakthrough

Something is on offer here, at a gate or on a path or wherever you are reading this.

You have a heart that God took responsibility for, and He took it long before you felt anything at all. Philippians 4:7 says the peace of God guards your heart and mind in Christ Jesus, and it is the Holy Spirit who posts that guard, which means something has been standing round your inside on every morning you walked that hill.

Nothing has to be diagnosed today. No inventory is coming, and you will not be asked to explain the flinch, partly because you cannot and partly because it does not matter for what comes next.

There is one small thing, and there is a God nearer to it than you are, and there is a way of putting it into His hands that does not require you to understand it first. That is what is here, and it is enough this morning and it will still be enough in the spring.

Declare this over yourself

You speak these as somebody standing in a place given to you rather than earned. The authority is Christ's own and delegated, and it is the Spirit named in Ezekiel and Philippians who guards the inside rather than your own watchfulness. What God tends, and when, is His to decide, so leave the outcome with Him and simply say what is true.

  1. Flinch I feel going past that gate, you are named and you are not a verdict on me. Ezekiel says God gives a new heart Himself and puts His Spirit within, so this is His to tend rather than mine to diagnose. You are the one thing I am handing over this morning.
  2. Suspicion that something is wrong underneath, you have no footing on this hill, and in the name of Jesus I set you over the wall. Scripture says the peace of God garrisons the heart in Christ Jesus, and His Spirit has been posted round mine the whole time. A tired place is not a spoiled one.
  3. Father, You keep my heart and You keep it kindly, and Your Spirit has been standing round my inside on every morning of this path. What is in me is Yours to guard. I am not on watch over myself alone, and I hand You this one thing now.
