The Line That Was Fraying Inside

This message is for the man who noticed he has begun leaving the room whenever a conversation turns serious, and who has mentioned it to nobody because nothing has actually gone wrong with anybody

A rope that is going to fail does not look like anything from the outside.

He has known that since he was young enough to be told it by somebody who had learned it the hard way. The outer strands hold their shape. The wear is on the inside, where the fibers run against each other every time the line takes a load, and by the time you can see it from the deck it has been happening for a long while.

That is not what this is about, but it is why the thing he noticed bothered him more than it should have.

Three weeks ago, at a gathering not unlike this one, somebody started saying something real. Not a crisis. Just one of those turns a conversation takes when the food is finished and the light has gone orange and somebody decides to say a true thing.

And he stood up and went to check the fire.

The fire did not need checking.

He came back four minutes later and the conversation had moved on and everybody was fine, and nobody noticed except him.

And then he thought about it, which is his weakness, and he worked out that he has done that a number of times now. Not always. Not obviously. But often enough that it is a thing rather than a coincidence.

Nothing has gone wrong with anybody. He is not in a falling out. He loves those people and they know it.

It is only that somewhere in the last while he started stepping out of the room when it got real, and he never once decided to, and there was no evening that was the evening it began.

He has told nobody. What would you even say.

If you have gone to check a fire lately, come and sit down on the sand. This is not going to become an inventory.

The Line That Was Fraying Inside

The One who started it is the One who is watching it

Paul writes a sentence that is usually read as encouragement about the future, and I want to read it as a statement about right now.

And I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.Philippians 1:6

Notice that this is not a promise about your effort. It is a statement about somebody else's attentiveness. The One who began the work is the One carrying it, which means He is the one watching the inside of the rope while you are looking at the outside.

That changes the whole meaning of what happened to you when you sat down and thought about the fire.

That was not a complaint arriving. That was the One doing the carrying, drawing your attention to one specific place where the fibers are running against each other, at a point where nothing has actually parted.

You were shown this early, and you were shown it gently, and both of those are on purpose. Philippians 1:6 puts the carrying in God's hands rather than yours, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the showing, which is exactly why what came to you was one habit and not an audit of your character.

One thing. Not the other four.

Now let me guard something, because I know what a thoughtful man does next with information like this.

He goes looking for the rest of it.

Do not. That is where a kindness gets turned into a project, and the project ends the same way every time: a long list, a heavy chest, and not one thing actually put back.

Look at what you were actually handed. Not a review of how you relate to people. Not a season in summary. One specific habit at one specific kind of moment, and then quiet. That restraint is the fingerprint of the One who did it.

You are being dealt with gently, and you are not under inspection. Isaiah 42:3 says a bruised reed is not broken by Him and a faintly burning wick is not put out, and it is His Spirit who carries a word at exactly the temperature a person can take, which is why sitting on the sand thinking about a fire did not feel like an alarm going off.

And here is the ground under the whole thing, which this site refuses to leave out.

You are being kept while you keep watch, and the noticing never rested on how observant you are. Philippians 1:6 again, and Jude 24 alongside it, both saying that the keeping and the carrying belong to God, and it is the Holy Spirit who is named as the guarantee, which means the wear on the inside of the line has been visible to Him the whole time you could not see it.

Nothing is broken. Nobody has been hurt. You went to check a fire a few times, and you can stay in your seat next Saturday, and no living person ever needs to be told why.

The breakthrough

Something is being handed to you here, on the sand or in a kitchen or wherever you are reading this.

You are holding a kindness, and you are holding it early, and there is nothing broken in your hands. Lamentations 3:23 says His mercies are new every morning and great is His faithfulness, and it is the Spirit of God who timed this so that a thing which is nothing yet came up while it is still nothing, which is what mercy looks like when it is doing its ordinary work.

You are not in a story and nothing has come apart. There is one habit at one kind of moment, and there is a next Saturday, and there are people who love you and have not noticed anything.

That is not a small outcome. That is the whole outcome. A man who deals with one small thing while it is small never has to deal with a large thing late, and God arranged the timing of this, not you.

Declare this over yourself

You speak these as somebody carried by a God who has never once looked at you harshly. The standing is given rather than earned, it is Christ's own and delegated, and it is the Spirit named in Philippians who is carrying the good work through rather than your watchfulness. What He grows out of one sentence is His to decide, so leave the outcome with Him and say what is true.

  1. Fire I keep going to check, you are named now and you are not a verdict on me. Philippians says the One who began the good work is the One carrying it, and His Spirit showed me one thing and then went quiet. You are what I am putting back this week.
  2. Pull to go hunting for the other four, you have no place round this fire, and in the name of Jesus I set you out past the driftwood. Scripture says a faintly burning wick is not put out by Him, and His Spirit carries a word at the temperature a person can take. Nothing here is broken, and I am not opening an inspection on myself.
  3. Lord, You showed me this early and You showed me gently, and Your Spirit has seen the inside of the line the whole time I could not. You are keeping me while I keep watch. What I see now I put back today, and I do it without alarm.
