The Thing He Stopped Saying Out Loud

This message is for the man who noticed he has stopped saying thank you out loud at the end of a good day, having done it for years, and who has said nothing because gratitude you feel is surely as good as gratitude you say

He used to say it out loud at the end of a good day.

Nothing formal. Standing at the back door with the light off behind him, or in the car before he went in, or at the sink. Three or four words. Thank you for today. That was a good one. That was more than I asked for.

He started doing it in his twenties for a reason he can no longer remember, and he did it for about fifteen years, and he would have told you it was one of the few genuinely load bearing things in his life.

A fortnight ago there was a day like that. Properly good. The kind that does not come along often and that you know is good while it is happening rather than afterwards.

And he stood at the back door with the light off and he thought it.

He thought, that was a good one.

And then he went to bed. And halfway up the stairs he understood that he had not said it, and that he could not remember the last time he had said it, and that somewhere in the last few years the whole thing had migrated from his mouth into his head without anybody moving it.

Now here is the reasonable objection, and it arrived immediately and it is why he has told nobody.

Gratitude you feel is surely as good as gratitude you say. God is not standing there with a clipboard checking whether it was audible.

That is true. And he has still been standing at that back door every night since thinking about it.

If something in your life has moved from your mouth into your head, come and sit under the lights a minute. This is not going to turn into an inventory.

The Thing He Stopped Saying Out Loud

New every morning is a statement about supply

There is a line in the middle of the saddest book in the Bible, which is where you would least expect it, and its position is the whole point.

The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases. His mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.Lamentations 3:22 and 23

A man is sitting in the ruins of a city writing the bleakest poetry in Scripture, and in the middle of it he says something about supply that has nothing to do with how the day is going.

New every morning. Not renewed when you deserve it. Not restored after you have sorted yourself out. Arriving fresh, daily, on a schedule that has nothing to do with your performance.

That is the material out of which the thought at your back door was made.

You were shown this early, and you were shown it kindly, and both of those are on purpose. Lamentations 3:23 puts mercy on a daily arrival rather than on a merit system, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it at exactly the temperature a person can take, which is why what came to you on the stairs was one small thing and not an audit.

Saying it out loud is not a technicality

Now let me answer your reasonable objection, because it is reasonable and it deserves an answer rather than a wave.

You are quite right that God is not scoring audibility. Nobody is going to tell you that a thought is worth less than a sentence, and the whole of this site would fall over if it started measuring people.

But saying a thing out loud does something to the person saying it, and that is not a technicality.

A thought is fast. A sentence is slow. A thought happens inside the same head that produced it, and a sentence has to be assembled and pushed through a body and heard by the ears that made it, and something in that process makes it land differently, which is why Scripture is full of people saying things out loud that they already knew perfectly well.

That is the whole reason to put it back. Not because Heaven has been short changed. Because you have.

You are being dealt with gently, and you are not under inspection. Isaiah 42:3 says a bruised reed is not broken by Him and a faintly burning wick is not put out, and it is His Spirit who carries a word at exactly the temperature a person can receive, so nothing at that back door was an alarm going off.

And here is what the whole thing rests on. You are being kept while you keep watch, and the noticing was never resting on your own alertness. Philippians 1:6 says the One who began a good work in you is carrying it through to completion, and it is the Holy Spirit who noticed a sentence you had stopped saying, because God is the one keeping you and you are not standing this watch alone.

One thing. Not the rest of the list. Say the one thing and stop there, because the pull to go looking for the others is what turns a mercy into a weight.

The breakthrough

Something is being handed to you here, under some lights or at a back door or wherever you are reading this.

You are holding a mercy, and you are holding it early, and there is nothing broken in your hands. Lamentations 3:23 says His mercies are new every morning and great is His faithfulness, and it is the Spirit of God who timed this so that a thing which is nothing yet came up while it is still nothing, which is what mercy looks like when it is doing its ordinary work.

There is no story here and nobody has drifted anywhere. There is a sentence that moved from your mouth into your head, and there is a back door, and there is tonight.

That is not a small outcome. That is the whole outcome. A man who deals with one small thing while it is small never has to deal with a large thing late, and God arranged the timing, not you.

Declare this over yourself

You speak these as somebody dealt with gently by a God whose mercies arrive daily rather than on merit. The standing is given rather than earned, it is Christ's own and delegated, and it is the Spirit named in Philippians who is carrying the good work through rather than your attention. What He grows out of one sentence is His to decide, so leave the outcome with Him and say what is true.

  1. Thank you that moved into my head, you are found and you are not a verdict on me. Lamentations says His mercies are new every morning and they arrive on a schedule that has nothing to do with me, and His Spirit brought one thing and then went quiet. You are what I am saying out loud tonight.
  2. Urge to go looking for the rest, you have no chair in this garden, and in the name of Jesus I set you out past the lights. Scripture says a faintly burning wick is not put out by Him, and His Spirit carries a word at the temperature a person can take. Nothing here is broken, and I am not opening a file on myself.
  3. Lord, You showed me this early and You showed me gently, and Your Spirit noticed a sentence I had stopped saying. You are keeping me while I keep watch. What I see now I put back today, and I do it without alarm.
