The Name He Stopped Saying

This message is for the man who realized he has not said one particular relative name in a prayer for months, without any argument having happened, and who has told nobody because it sounds like nothing when you say it out loud

He prays at the same time every night, standing up, in the kitchen, with the light over the cooker on and everything else off.

It is not a long thing. Ten minutes, maybe. He goes through the family the way you would go through a house checking the doors, and he has done it for years, and his wife knows to leave him to it.

A few weeks ago he got to the end and turned the light off and went up, and halfway up the stairs he stopped.

He had not said his brother in law's name.

He went back down and stood in the dark kitchen and worked it out, and the answer was worse than he expected. Not tonight. Not last week. He could not remember the last time.

Nothing has happened. That is what makes it strange. There was no argument, no falling out, nothing anybody would remember. They see each other at things. They are perfectly friendly. It is not that he stopped liking the man.

It is that somewhere in the last year or two the name went out of the list, and he never once decided that it should, and there was no evening when he thought, I will not say that one tonight.

He stood there for a while and then he did what most of us do.

He thought, that is far too small to make anything of.

And he went to bed. And it has been with him ever since.

If you have a name that has quietly gone out of your list, come and sit down in this kitchen. This is not going to turn into an examination.

The Name He Stopped Saying

The restoring word is a gentle word

There is an instruction in Galatians that most people only ever hear the first half of.

Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness.Galatians 6:1

The word behind restore there is the word you would use for setting a bone, or for mending a net so it can hold a catch again. It is repair language, and it belongs to something that is still worth using.

And then Paul puts a temperature on it, which is the half that gets left out. In a spirit of gentleness. Not sternly. Not urgently. Not with a list.

Now here is why that verse matters to a man standing in a dark kitchen over a name.

You have assumed that the thought which stopped you on the stairs was an accusation. It was not. Something drew your attention to one specific omission, gently, at a moment when nothing whatever had gone wrong between you and anybody.

You were shown that name early, and you were shown it kindly, and both of those were on purpose. Galatians 6:1 sets the temperature of any real correction at gentleness, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the showing, which is precisely why what came to you on the stairs was one name and not an indictment.

He stopped at one. Do the same.

Now I want to guard something, because I know exactly what a conscientious man does next.

He goes looking for the others.

Do not. This is where a kindness gets turned into a project, and the project ends the same way every time: a long list, a heavy chest, and not one thing actually put back.

Look at what you were actually given. Not a review of your prayer life. Not an assessment of your family relationships. One name, and then quiet. That restraint is the fingerprint of the One who did it.

You are being handled gently, and you are not under inspection. Isaiah 42:3 says a bruised reed is not broken by Him and a smoldering wick is not put out, and it is His Spirit who carries a word at the exact temperature a person can receive, which is why a dark kitchen did not feel like an alarm going off.

And here is what the whole thing rests on. You are being kept while you keep watch, and the noticing was never resting on how sharp you are. Philippians 1:6 says the One who began a good work in you is carrying it through to completion, and it is the Holy Spirit who noticed a name you had already stopped noticing, because God is the one keeping you and you are not standing this watch alone.

Nothing is broken. Nobody has been harmed. A name that fell out of a list can go back into a list tonight, and it takes about two seconds, and no living person ever has to know it happened.

The breakthrough

Something is being handed to you here, in a kitchen or on a stair or wherever you are reading this.

You are holding a kindness, and you are holding it early, and there is nothing broken in your hands. Lamentations 3:23 says His mercies are new every morning and great is His faithfulness, and it is the Spirit of God who timed this so that a thing which is nothing yet came up while it is still nothing, and that is exactly what mercy looks like when it works properly.

There is no story here. Nobody has drifted anywhere. There is one name that fell quietly out of a list, in a house where nothing went wrong, and it can go back in tonight before you turn the cooker light off.

That is not a small outcome. That is the whole outcome. A man who deals with one small thing while it is small never has to deal with a large thing late, and God arranged the timing of this, not you.

Declare this over yourself

You speak these as somebody looked at by a God who has never once looked at you harshly. The standing is given rather than earned, it is Christ's own and delegated, and it is the Spirit named in Galatians and Philippians who does the restoring rather than your vigilance. What He grows out of one sentence is His to decide, so leave the outcome with Him and say what is true.

  1. Name that fell quietly out of my list, you are found and you are not a verdict on me. Galatians says the restoring is done in a spirit of gentleness, and the Holy Spirit brought one name and then went quiet. You are what I am putting back tonight.
  2. Pull to go looking for the others, you have no place in this kitchen, and in the name of Jesus I set you out in the courtyard. Scripture says a smoldering wick is not put out by Him, and His Spirit carries a word at the temperature a person can take. Nothing here is broken, and I am not opening an inspection on myself.
  3. Lord, You showed me this early and You showed me gently, and Your Spirit noticed what I had stopped noticing. You are keeping me while I keep watch. What I see now I put back today, and I do it without alarm.
