The Window She Stopped Opening

This message is for the woman who realized she has stopped singing in her own kitchen, having sung there every morning for most of her adult life, and who has said nothing because losing a habit of humming is not a thing you raise with anyone

There is a window over that sink that she used to open first thing, whatever the weather, because a kitchen wants air in it.

She still opens it. That is not the thing.

The thing is what used to come out of it.

She sang. Every morning of her adult life, near enough. Not performing, nothing anybody was meant to hear, just the low continuous business of a woman who has always had a tune going while her hands are busy. Her children could tell what sort of day it was going to be from the doorway.

Three weeks ago her youngest, who is thirty one and rang for something else entirely, said in the middle of the conversation: Mum, you have gone quiet in the mornings.

And she said, have I.

And after she put the phone down she stood at the sink with the window open and worked out that she had.

She could not tell you when. Nothing happened. Nobody died, nothing broke, there was no bad season that she could put a finger on. She just at some point stopped, the way you stop doing a thing you never decided to do in the first place.

She has told nobody, because how would you even say it. I have stopped humming. It is not a problem. It is not anything. You would sound ridiculous.

But it has stayed with her for three weeks now, every morning, at that window.

If something in your house has gone quiet, come and sit at this table. This is not going to become a list.

The Window She Stopped Opening

Kindness is what led you here

There is a sentence in Romans that a great many people have only ever heard in a stern voice, and it is not written in one.

Do you presume on the riches of His kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?Romans 2:4

Read the mechanism in that. Not fear. Not warning. Kindness is the thing named as what leads a person to turn round, and Paul says it as though it were obvious.

So when something small and true arrived in your kitchen after a phone call, the question is what it was made of, and Scripture answers that plainly. It was made of kindness. That is what does this work. That is the only thing that has ever done this work.

You were shown this early and you were shown it kindly, and both of those are on purpose. Romans 2:4 names kindness as what leads a person home, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it at exactly the temperature a person can receive, which is why what came to you was one sentence about singing and not a review of your life.

An accusation would have brought the whole file. It brought a window and a tune.

One thing. Do not go looking for the rest.

Now let me guard something, because I know what happens next in a woman who has just seen something clearly.

You start hunting.

Do not. This is the exact point where a kindness gets turned into a project, and the project ends the same way every time: a long list, a heavy chest, and not one thing put back.

Notice what you actually received. Not an assessment of your inner life. Not a review of the last few years. One specific small thing, and then quiet. That restraint is the signature.

You are being dealt with gently, and you are not under inspection. Isaiah 42:3 says a bruised reed is not broken by Him and a faintly burning wick is not put out, and it is His Spirit who carries a word at exactly the temperature a person can take, so nothing at that sink was an alarm going off.

And here is what the whole thing rests on, which this site will not leave out.

You are being kept while you keep watch, and the noticing was never resting on your own attention. Philippians 1:6 says the One who began a good work in you is carrying it through to completion, and it is the Holy Spirit who noticed a quiet kitchen you had stopped hearing, because God is the one keeping you and you have not been standing this watch alone.

Nothing is broken. Nothing has been lost that cannot be back by tomorrow morning. A woman who has stopped singing can sing tomorrow at that window, and it costs nothing, and no living person ever has to be told why.

The breakthrough

Something is being handed to you here, at a sink or a table or wherever you are reading this.

You are holding a kindness, and you are holding it early, and there is nothing broken in your hands. Lamentations 3:23 says His mercies are new every morning and great is His faithfulness, and it is the Spirit of God who timed this so that a thing which is nothing yet came up while it is still nothing, which is exactly what mercy looks like when it works.

You are not in a story. Nobody has drifted anywhere. There is a tune that went out of a kitchen and a daughter who noticed on the phone, and there is tomorrow morning with the window open.

That is not a small outcome. That is the whole outcome. A woman who deals with one small thing while it is small never has to deal with a large thing late, and God arranged the timing of this, not you.

Declare this over yourself

You speak these as somebody led by kindness rather than driven by warning. The standing is given rather than earned, it is Christ's own and delegated, and it is the Spirit named in Philippians who carries the good work through rather than your attention. What He grows out of one sentence is His to decide, so leave the outcome with Him and say what is true.

  1. Tune that went out of my kitchen, you are found and you are not a verdict on me. Romans says it is the kindness of God that leads a person, and the Holy Spirit brought one thing and then went quiet. You are what I am putting back tomorrow.
  2. Urge to go hunting for the rest, you have no chair at this table, and in the name of Jesus I set you out in the yard. Scripture says a faintly burning wick is not put out by Him, and His Spirit carries a word at the temperature a person can take. Nothing here is broken, and I am not opening an inspection on myself.
  3. Lord, You showed me this early and You showed me gently, and Your Spirit noticed a quiet house I had stopped hearing. You are keeping me while I keep watch. What I see now I put back today, and I do it without alarm.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
