Caught In TimePsalm 139:23

The Lamp He Stopped Checking

This message is for the man who noticed that he now prays in the car and never at home, and who has said nothing because praying in a car is still praying and it sounds absurd to raise it

He prays in the car. He has done for a while.

It is not a problem. He would say that to you before you had finished the sentence, and he would be right, because praying in a car is praying and God is not fussy about geography.

But here is what happened, and it happened at a set of traffic lights, which is where a lot of things happen.

He finished, the way he does, coming into town. And a small thought arrived and sat in the passenger seat.

You do not do this at home any more.

He thought about it for the length of one light. And the answer was no. He does not. Not in the chair he used to use, not at the kitchen table, not anywhere in the house at all.

He could not tell you when it moved. There was no week where he decided that the car would be the place now. It simply migrated, over what he thinks is about two years, from a room to a vehicle, and nothing about it announced itself.

And nothing is wrong. He is praying. That is the thing that has made it impossible to mention. If he said it out loud to anybody they would tell him it did not matter, and they would be right, and he would still be left with the small fact he cannot put down.

Because a thing that moves without you moving it has moved for a reason, and he does not know the reason, and it is far too small to raise.

If something in your life has quietly relocated, come and sit on this bench. Nobody is going to turn this into an inventory.

The Lamp He Stopped Checking

He asked to be looked at

There is a line at the end of the psalm about being completely known, and everybody quotes it and very few people notice that it is a request.

Search me, O God, and know my heart. Try me and know my thoughts.Psalm 139:23

David asks for it. And he asks for it at the end of a whole psalm about being known so thoroughly and so tenderly that he cannot find the edge of it. Hemmed in behind and before. A hand laid on him. Darkness and light the same to the One looking.

He is not inviting an audit. He is inviting the attention of somebody who has never once looked at him unkindly, and the request comes at the end because the psalm has spent thirty verses establishing what sort of looking it is.

That is what happened at your traffic lights.

You were shown this early, and you were shown it gently, and both of those are on purpose. Psalm 139:23 puts the searching in the same breath as the hemming in, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the showing, which is why what arrived in your car was one sentence and not a summary of your spiritual condition.

One. Then stop.

Now let me guard something, because I know what a thoughtful man does next.

You go looking for the pattern. You start asking what else has migrated, and whether this is a symptom, and what it says about the last two years, and within about four minutes a kindness has become a project.

Do not. Look at what you were actually given: one specific observation about one specific place, and then quiet.

That restraint is the fingerprint. You are being dealt with gently, and you are not under inspection. Isaiah 42:3 says a bruised reed is not broken by Him and a faintly burning wick is not put out, and it is His Spirit who carries a word at exactly the temperature a person can take, so nothing at those lights was an alarm going off.

And here is the ground it stands on, which this site will not leave out.

You are being kept while you keep watch, and the noticing was never resting on your own alertness. Philippians 1:6 says the One who began a good work in you is carrying it through to completion, and it is the Holy Spirit who noticed a chair you had stopped sitting in, because God is the one keeping you and you are not standing this watch alone.

Nothing is broken. Nothing has been lost. A man who prays in a car can pray in a chair tonight, and it costs nothing, and no living person ever needs to know why.

And the small fact that has been bothering you is not a symptom of anything sinister. It is very often just what happens: a good thing follows the shape of a life, and lives change shape, and the only reason to put this one back is that the room mattered to you and you noticed that it had gone.

That is reason enough. It does not need to be more than that.

The breakthrough

Something is being handed to you here, on a bench or in a car or wherever you are reading this.

You are holding a kindness, and you are holding it early, and there is nothing broken in your hands. Lamentations 3:23 says His mercies are new every morning and great is His faithfulness, and it is the Spirit of God who timed this so that a thing which is nothing yet came up while it is still nothing, which is what mercy looks like when it works properly.

There is no story here and nobody has drifted anywhere. There is a chair in a room and a man who used to sit in it, and there is this evening.

That is not a small outcome. That is the whole outcome. A man who deals with one small thing while it is small never has to deal with a large thing late, and God arranged the timing of this, not you.

Declare this over yourself

You speak these as somebody searched by a God who has never once looked at you unkindly. The standing is given rather than earned, it is Christ's own and delegated, and it is the Spirit named in Psalm 139 who does the searching and the leading rather than your alertness. What He grows out of one sentence is His to decide, so leave the outcome with Him and say what is true.

  1. Chair I stopped sitting in, you are named now and you are not a verdict on me. David asked God to search him and the Holy Spirit stopped at one thing, so what came at those lights was a kindness rather than a complaint. You are what I am putting back tonight.
  2. Urge to hunt for the pattern, you have no place on this bench, and in the name of Jesus I set you off this hill. Scripture says a faintly burning wick is not put out by Him, and His Spirit carries a word at the temperature a person can take. Nothing here is broken, and I am not opening a file on myself.
  3. Lord, You showed me this early and You showed me gently, and Your Spirit noticed a room I had stopped praying in. You are keeping me while I keep watch. What I see now I put back today, and I do it without alarm.
